Welcome to gavo's Retro Challenge 2009 page
My Challenge
Well, I almost wasnt going to enter (what a loss to the competition that would have been!). I'm slack, not that skilled, would rather drink bourbon most of the time and am easily distracted. Still. It is winter here, swine flu is everywhere, its bloody cold outside and I'm out of bourbon (and too prove to myself I dont have a problem I refuse to buy any more - until August anyway). So what the hell, I'll give it a shot.
The thing I would like to achieve this time round is the installation of Apple A/UX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A/UX) on my new (old) Mac SE/30 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_SE/30) - gee, isnt wikipedia clever. I would mainly like to do this so that I can start up a competitive offering to RetroNET and wipe the smile of that smug bastard LD8's face - I mean, lets be honest - real men run Apple A/UX on thier old school 68k Mac, not some namby pamby _modern_ Linux or BSD - which doesnt even have a Mac GUI to go with it! I mean whats up with that.
To be fair, although I had heard of Apple A/UX - I (until recently) didnt know much about it and was reasonably surprised to learn that it came with a full Mac GUI familiar to Mac users of the time and was in fact (supposedly) System 7 compatible - meaning you could run your System 7 Apps on it - hopefully I'll see for myself how true and seamless this is (or isnt).
In reality, there should be nothing too hard about the Apple A/UX install as there is a good FAQ on the internet and a reasonable amount of information on the net about it (including some nice reviews). Having said that, the things I am worried about are...
1. I dont (but hopefully soon will) have a compatible (or any) SCSI CD-ROM drive to install from
2. I dont know if my Ethernet card is supported - I would like to get it on the net if possible (to steal all of LD8's members)
Anyway, go ahead and check out my slog
